Volunteer Opportunities

Food Delivery

On the 2nd Saturday of each month, HIVCO volunteers deliver food boxes directly to clients' homes. Once a month, HIVCO needs drivers to deliver food boxes throughout our service area: Cook, Lake, Kane, McHenry, and DeKalb counties. This requires a minimum 1 year commitment and training about delivery procedures and confidentiality. The training takes 30-45 minutes and can be done at either the Elk Grove Village or Midlothian office with the Volunteer and Community Coordinator.

Packing

Packing

HIVCO needs volunteers to help pack non-perishable food boxes in preparation for delivery to our clients. Each month, we hold Packing Nights at our warehouse on the Tuesday and Thursday evening prior to delivery from 5 PM - 8 PM. Food and beverages are provided.

The 2002 Packing dates are listed below. Please call to let us know when you will be packing with us!

January 8 and 10                                                                                February 5 and 7                                                                                    March 5 and 7                                                                                         April 9 and 11                                                                                              May 7 and 9                                                                                                 June 4 and 6                                                                                              July 9 and 11                                                                                        August 6 and 8                                                                                      September 10 and 12                                                                                   October 8 and 10                                                                                       November 5 and 7                                                                                December 10 and 12

Food Drives

HIVCO conducts food drives at various grocery stores in the Chicagoland area. Volunteers staff tables outside area grocery stores and hand HIVCO's "wish list" of food items to customers, asking them to donate items from the list. The food drives are split into two shifts: 10 am - 12:30 pm & 12:30 pm - 3 pm. We need 4 to 8 volunteers and a Site Manager for each shift. Site Managers are experienced volunteers trained to oversee a food drive. These food drives are a staple in HIVCO's "diet," as donations provide us with 50% of our food for our Hand-to-Hand Food Network. For a list of HIVCO's 2002 Grocery Store Food Drives, please see below.

If you have a group interested in sponsoring your own grocery store drive, or a drive at a business, faith institution, or school, please contact HIVCO's Volunteer and Community Coordinator.

Warehouse

Office and Warehouse Help

In both of our offices, there are newsletters to prepare and mail, phone calls to be made, files to update, etc. In our Elk Grove Village warehouse, there are opportunities to sort donated food and restock our shelves in preparation of the next delivery. In our library in Midlothian, there are opportunities to do Internet research and prepare literature.

Pop Top Collection

Through a special recycling program, HIVCO receives a penny for each pop-top it collects. Pop-tops are quite valuable and serve as a great fundraiser. Simply collect pop-tops off soda cans and ask your friends and family to do the same. Save them in a container and turn them into HIVCO when it is full.

We hope we will be able to count on your support. If you'd like to volunteer or have any questions regarding the program, please call or

Sincerely,

Adam Blackman
Volunteer and Community Coordinator
